Your Voyage > Why practice yoga?

Some people absorb knowledge through words, others through doing. Yoga literally means to bind, to unify. So the practice of yoga encourages a balanced approach to learning that encompasses both manners of wisdom. Westerners, Washingtonians in particular, function extensively and deeply in the realm of words and ideas. A vibrant yoga practice can counterpoise that emphasis to bring balance.

The practice of yoga demonstrates the value of quieting the words and of pausing the rapid delivery of complex ideas so prevalent in Washington DC. Yoga does this by illuminating the corporal experience of understanding and insight. And in doing so, the whole body wakes up as a sensory object that can absorb knowledge. The reward is a more graceful and giving mind and body.

Yoga is more than an athletic endeavor. Indeed, yoga is physical. The athletic components are often the most explicit, impressive and inspiring. But, a full awakening of the body in yoga goes beyond lung capacity and lactic acid.

Yoga stirs all of the senses of the body and offers information to be perceived through touch, sound, smell, taste and sight. In yoga, the skin, the ears, the nose, the tongue and the eyes are called the organs of perception. The senses are explicitly used to reconnect the mind. Yoga is apprehended through the senses. And with nilambu’s support, you’ll learn in a new way.

My body/spirit is happy when I do it. It helps me be more flexible in body and mind.
– Sally

Yoga puts me in touch with my body. I do it to promote core strength and balance. Yoga also calms me. What excites me is how you can really direct movements and breathing with your thoughts. I am not a very spiritual person but this has added another dimension to my exercise.
