Your
Voyage > What
to expect
nilambu means blue water. Just as water can make you feel refreshed, nilambu
offers yoga that makes you feel renewed. At nilambu, you can expect information, a safe wellspring, illumination, and meditation in movement. Scroll down to see what current clients value about nilambu. I hope you’ll feel revived and buoyant after a nilambu class just as one does in the sea.
Information
You’ll be pointed in the right direction to find your
sea legs
Each client is provided with a written syllabus of the class with the name
of each pose (called asana in Sanskrit) in English and Sanskrit. Although
the class is tailored to the immediate needs of the clients, a general focus
is planned and provided in print. This way, the students more readily remembers
the asanas and the effect on the body and can access the experience on their
own during their home practice. Resources on the web are also offered for reference.
Safe wellspring
You’ll be supported and provided with a safe place
for learning and trying new things.
The clients’ practice will only develop in a safe environment. Each
client captains her own ship and sets the course. nilambu will inspire and
challenge in a fun and engaging manner. And will be free of coercion. Clients
maintain the right to say no to being touched or adjusted or to working with
a partner. Every one is free to move at her pace and to decide what is okay
for his or her body.
nilambu abides by the California Yoga Teachers Association Code of Professional
Ethics which can be found on the internet at: http://www.yogateachersassoc.org/ethics/
Illumination
You’ll hear words that shed light on the body’s
experience.
Each class includes a recitation of poetry or prose. These words are selected
to help the mind shed light on the physical experience and are gathered from
classical and contemporary poetry, spiritual essays of Christian, Buddhist
or non-religious origin, ancient texts of yoga, or current writings on yoga.
Sometimes these offerings precede the practice; other times the thoughts are
offered toward the end of class. The goal is that these words bring about
that union through a new understanding.
Meditation in Movement
You’ll find balance thru the body and
the breath.
nilambu yoga sessions are in the vinyasa method. Vinyasa means flowing
and so the poses flow one into another synchronized to the breath. Sun Salutations
form the basic structure and variations with other poses are offered. Done
to music such as rhythmic jazz, salsa or opera, this yoga is really fun. Restorative
yoga (not vinyasa) is typically offered in silence in order to assist deep
relaxation.
A note about athleticism: Athletes are competitors – they compete against
themselves, their last practice, as well as others. Vinyasa yoga is vigorously
athletic but doesn’t embrace the competitive mindset of typical of athletes.
A forward bend comes easily one day and not so easy the next. Yoga allows
that.
Here’s what others value about nilambu classes:
You can feel the energy of her warmth and wit vibrating in the room. The
class atmosphere encourages me to strive, not compete. It's a welcome relief
and change from the hectic, pressured pace of my daily life.

All the personal attention. Cassandra really thinks about her classes and
prepares thoroughly for them. The studio is intimate, comfortable. Emphasis
on proper alignment, and holding postures for a good time, lots of restorative
postures, generous use of props, and free water!
– Sally
It’s a place that allows you to grow into yoga.
- Maria
Intimate environment; all equipment is provided; H20 and class syllabus.
– Kate
Nilambu classes are terrific! Toning, stretching, the challenge and relaxation.
She is very knowledgeable of yoga and the techniques.
– Carole
I look forward to the entire experience, it’s like a ritual: walking
in, greeting and being greeted, the smell, all the blue and wood, the salutations,
the warmth (literal and figurative), ending on a calm note, getting back in
the car feeling stretched and accomplished.
