voyage > Why I teach
I teach yoga because of my deep desire to communicate what I understand, know, feel and see about yoga. In my personal practice, I’ve experienced yoga’s immense power, especially as I deal with a chronic illness. I've continued my exploration of yoga's force and influence on the body, mind and soul. A natural outcome of that learning and curiousity is to share my enthusiasm for yoga and yoga's benefits with as many as I can. I chose an extensive teacher training because I wanted to have a wide repertoire and deep background of knowledge to draw on in this endeavor. I wished to know the anatomy and functions of the body to better understand the functioning (or malfunctioning) of my own body - as well as how and why yoga affects all aspects of existence. The mindfulness of yoga and the spiritual aspects of a yoga practice are just as essential as the physical postures. My year of intense yoga practice and study gave me a focus beyond my health struggles. My physical work that year also taught me so much I could never glean from words - which was a striking constrast for me, a lawyer and writer who worshiped words. Through the practice of poses, I learned much to share with others about yoga - including how fun and gratifying yoga can be. The sense of wonder and joy when a client first balances in crane pose, for example, is contagious and exciting. I also believe strongly that yoga is for everyone and that anyone can experience yoga's benefits. I sometimes hear that one can't do yoga because he isn't flexible. But yoga is about balance. You become more flexible with practice. And those that are flexible become stronger with practice. So, some come to yoga to gain flexibility, others strength, others both. Yoga can equalize the imbalances of your body when practiced with an honest curiosity, openness and dedication. One translation of a yoga teacher is a “darkness dispeller.” Yoga dissipated much darkness for me, and I want to dispel darkness for others. I bring sensitivity to my teaching that enables me to listen and respond well. Yoga is my passion, and I delight in yoga every day.
